Machines using Smart Steppers such as CNC machines, pick and place machines and 3D Printers may notice random, sporadic and inexplicable loss of positional accuracy which is caused by electrical noise.

The ESTechnical Signal Isolation and Power Conditioning PCB for Smart Steppers is an input stage for use with the NEMA 17 Smart Stepper and the NEMA 23 Smart Stepper to resolve common electrical noise issues.

  • Filters for the power supplies reduce electrical noise being radiated by power cables
  • Opto isolated signalling prevents ground loops
  • Opto isolated inputs are electrical noise resistant

Suitable for the following Smart Stepper motors:

If you experience any of the following, the ESTechnical Signal Isolation and Power Conditioning PCB will prevent these issues:

  • Electrical noise causing motion when no motion is commanded
  • Electrical noise while in motion leading to loss of accuracy
  • Smart Stepper being constantly enabled/disabled (this is characterised by being able to rotate the motor shaft and the error is not corrected despite some resistance being felt from the motor)
  • Other motors or electrical loads causing the Smart Stepper(s) to move when not commanded

In conjunction with the ESTechnical Signal Isolation and Power Conditioning PCB we also recommend installing the ESTechnical Signalling Line Driver PCB to prevent Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) and to enable high speed open-drain signalling.

Description

All stepper motor drivers produce some electrical noise which is much more apparent when operating with a high motor current.

If your machine uses Smart Steppers the ESTechnical Signal Isolation and Power Conditioning PCB will eliminate problems with the Smart Steppers losing position accuracy caused by electrical noise.

The ESTechnical Signal Isolation and Power Conditioning PCB also prevents electrical noise originating from Smart Steppers affecting other parts of your machine.

Troubleshooting loss of position accuracy

Traditional stepper motors and drivers used in motion control applications, where there is no position feedback, can suffer from a loss of position accuracy due to mechanical issues. To overcome this a Smart Stepper can be installed in place of a traditional stepper motor and driver. Smart steppers are a much needed improvement over traditional stepper motors and drivers.  A Smart Stepper incorporates realtime PID control with position feedback and will detect positional error and correct for it. Accurate position control means higher acceleration and top speeds can be achieved. 

Whilst the Smart Stepper is an improvement on the traditional stepper and driver, Smart Steppers (based on the Nano Zero design) are very sensitive to electrical noise. Problems caused by electrical noise being present in the step/direction/enable signalling leads to loss of accurate step count and error in the commanded motor position resulting in a loss of position accuracy. This in turn leads to loss of repeatability over many moves.

  1. A traditional stepper motor and driver loses position accuracy due to loss of steps. Mechanical load prevents the stepper motor accurately following the commanded steps, so the position accuracy is lost.
    Solution: Upgrade to a Smart Stepper
    • All stepper motor drivers cause electrical noise in normal operation. This is due to high frequency switching of the load current. This noise is radiated by the wiring of the machine. This may have no noticeable affect, however, this electrical noise can couple onto signalling and cause problems such as Smart Steppers enabling / disabling randomly; extra step pulses being counted by Smart Stepper(s); or other devices malfunctioning.
  2. Smart Stepper loses position accuracy due to electrical noise. Extra steps are counted by the Smart Stepper inputs, causing position error to accumulate.
    Solution: Upgrade to the ESTechnical Signal Isolation and Power Conditioning PCB
    • Whilst it is almost impossible to prevent all radiated noise, the ESTechnical Signal Isolation and Power Conditioning PCB provides filters which significantly reduce the high frequency noise present in your machine wiring.
    • Whatever the cause of the electrical noise, opto-isolated signalling is an industry standard way of preventing noise from causing problems with signalling. The ESTechnical Signal Isolation and Power Conditioning PCB incorporates opto-isolated signalling for step/direction/enable signals and eliminates common-mode noise issues.
  3. Low cost machine controllers are not intended to drive long cables for step/direction/enable signalling. The majority of low cost machine controllers do not offer any protection of these signals, therefore it is easy for ESD to cause damage to the machine controller once long cables are connected to step/direction/enable signals for controlling Smart Steppers.
    Solution: Use the ESTechnical Signalling Line Driver PCB which offers ESD protection and high speed open-drain signalling, ideal for signalling passed through long cables.

After the six months we will still repair/replace any product that is returned at any time, no questions asked, for a small fee - we think that's a fair policy since the controller requires fitting by the user and sometimes mistakes happen.
